Introduction to Oil & Cold Wax with Carolyn Harrington
15th and 16th August 9.00am-4.00pm
ERAS Sunday School
Step into the rich, tactile world of oil and cold wax painting, where intuition meets technique.
This hands-on workshop invites artists to explore the expressive possibilities of layered surfaces, texture, and mark-making.
You’ll learn how to build depth and luminosity using oil paint mixed with cold wax medium, creating a beautifully matte and tactile surface.
With step by step guidance, we’ll experiment with imprinting textures, scratching and gouging, masking, and using stencils to add dynamic structure and movement to your work.
We’ll also delve into solvent reduction techniques for subtle transparency effects and learn how to integrate drawing media—such as charcoal, graphite, or oil sticks—to enrich surface interest and line variation.
As you develop your compositions, we’ll explore how to balance value, shape, and line, and how to use colour enhancement to evoke mood and harmony.
By the end of the session, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how to combine control and spontaneity in your creative process—and take home one or more finished or in-progress pieces that reflect your unique artistic style.
What You’ll Explore:
Building layers with oils and cold wax
Creating texture through imprinting and reduction
Scratching, gouging, and carving into the surface
Using stencils and masking to shape composition
Who It’s For:
Artists and creatives with some understanding of composition who are keen to explore this wonderfully tactile medium.

Artist Bio:
Carolyn is an animal and nature lover, which is abundantly clear through many of her paintings.
Goats, dogs, birds, cows, sheep and many more have been her subjects, sometimes with small comical twists, that now hang in many homes around Australia.
When an occasional breathing space has beckoned, Carolyn has created eclectic series from medieval ladies and gentleman in finely adorned garments to robust abstracts that can bring new life to almost any setting.
In keeping with this spark of diversity, and for many years a dedicated acrylic artist, Carolyn entered the world of oil and cold wax painting in 2019 and has developed her style and portfolio with this amazingly textural medium.
Carolyn's flair for cold wax has been continuously enhanced over the years by association and support of renowned artists in this field, Jerry McLaughlin, Kym Barrett, Cheryl McGannon and Melinda Cootsona.
