About the artist
Daniel Butterworth is an accomplished Australian figurative and portrait artist whose passion for art began at just eight years of age, when seeing a Rembrandt self-portrait inspired a lifelong desire to draw and paint.
Based in Kyneton, Victoria, Daniel has been a practising artist for more than 20 years. After beginning his career as a signwriter, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts at La Trobe University.
Daniel has achieved considerable recognition through his selection as a finalist in many of Australia's prestigious art prizes, including the Archibald Prize, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Brisbane Portrait Prize, Black Swan Portraiture Prize, Percival Portrait Painting Prize and Kilgour Prize.
Known for his bold, expressive and spontaneous approach, Daniel frequently uses self-portraiture to explore personal, social and political themes. His distinctive painting style combines energetic brushwork, strong tonal values and vibrant colour. Often working on recycled cardboard with household acrylic paints, he embraces the freedom and unpredictability of his materials to create powerful, character-filled works.
Daniel has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions and is a sought-after workshop tutor, encouraging artists to loosen their technique, experiment with materials and develop confidence in their own creative expression.
In 2025, Daniel appeared in the opening episode of the Australian television series Portrait Artist of the Year, showcasing his distinctive approach to portraiture to a national audience.
