About the workshop

Participants will begin with watercolour, using simple experimental techniques to build layers of colour, texture, and tone.

These initial washes and marks act as a starting point rather than a plan, creating surfaces that invite response. From there, Elaine will guide participants in working back into these pages using pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink, responding to what is already present on the paper.

Throughout the workshop, emphasis is placed on observation, sensitivity to marks, and developing confidence in personal visual language.

Elaine will offer gentle prompts and demonstrations to help participants recognise when to add, soften, emphasise, or leave a mark alone.

The process supports risk-taking in a safe, encouraging environment and helps artists move beyond habits or expectations.

This workshop is suited to artists who want to refresh their drawing practice, develop expressive confidence, or reconnect with a more playful and intuitive way of working.

Experimental Drawing: A Playful Two-Day Drawing Intensive with Elaine Camlin
About the artist

Elaine Camlin was born in Northern Ireland before migrating to Australia with her family in 1989. Her formative years were spent in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, where her innate creativity flourished through exploration and the collection of natural curiosities. This early engagement with her surroundings laid the foundation for her connection to place.

Elaine pursued her passion for art by studying printmaking at the Australian National University School of Art in Canberra. After completing her studies, she returned to Wagga Wagga, where she embraced a regional practice deeply rooted in community engagement. Her work emphasises the significance of creative communication and the therapeutic potential of art, combining her expertise in printmaking with a dedication to community and art therapy.

Elaine’s artistic practice examines thematic concepts as they relate to her sense of place. She is particularly interested in the transient nature of growth and decay, emphasising the vital role of regeneration within our environment. Her works are often inspired by personal memories and moments, exploring both tangible and imaginative organic forms.

Elaine actively contributes to the creative arts landscape in the Riverina region through her studio, Unique State. She sustains her artistic practice by participating in both solo and group exhibitions locally and interstate. Her involvement in the printmaking community is extensive, having participated in print exchanges and projects such as Imaginings, Overwintering Project, and the Human Emotion Print Exchange. During the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, she facilitated the Pandemic Print Exchange (PPE) with 38 artists working in isolation across Australia and internationally.

Elaine's artistic excellence has been recognized through numerous awards, grants, residencies and commissions. Her accolades include RAD X Megalo Printmaking Residency in 2025, Renew Arts Project, recognition in the Northern Beaches Artist Book Prize and the Peebles Print Prize, commissioned by Eastern Riverina Arts for various projects, and recipient of Country Arts Support Program and the Riverina Water Community Grant, highlighting her impact on the regional arts landscape. She is represented by KIN Gallery in Braddon, ACT, and her works are part of the permanent collection at the Orange Regional Museum in NSW.

Elaine's commitment to community engagement is evident in her extensive involvement with various projects and workshops aimed at fostering creativity and well-being. Her dedication to art education and community service is reflected in her work as a mentor, educator, and facilitator of numerous community art initiatives.
